This month’s Cards & Coffee class theme was Mother’s Day.
To make these cards we used the Floral Essence stamp set and coordinating punch. I am so sad that these items are going to be retired with the next Annual Catalogue! The stamp set is so easy to use, and features some super sweet sentiments.
Inspiration for the colour scheme for these two cards came from another Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator named Alisa Tilsner. The colours Alisa had used were Rococo Rose, Blushing Bride, Pool Party, and Bermuda Bay. You can see her original project pictures at the end of this blog post.
To keep the card designs within a beginner/casual crafter level I made use of stamping and sponging colouring, as well as using the coordinating punch to add interest. For this card we used the three petal flower image to create the background in tone-on-tone stamping. This technique is a simple way to make your own Designer Series Paper. We sued the Sponge Brushes to add some colour around the four edges.
For this next card, we used a fun masking technique to add colour to the front panel. The Sponge Brushes are great for adding nice, smooth colour in larger areas. We used a different flower image in the stamp set, and added detail with the small leaf and the flower centre. To add some pizzazz, we spritzed the masked area with Frost White Shimmer Paint using a Water Painter.
A wee heart trinket from the Playful Pets Trinkets pack tied onto the sentiment strip with a length of Blushing Bride Twine from the Snail Mail Twine Combo Pack finished off the card nicely.
Recently, I had a focus on the handmade items I make and normally have for sale at markets and a local pop up shop over on my Facebook page. I showcased these items and posted games. One of which asked participants to name a technique or Stampin’ Up! product that they would like to see in a tutorial video from me. The winner was Rosie Dunn, with the suggestion of masking technique.
To make this project you will need:
Calypso Coral cardstock – 10.5cm x 29.8cm
Perennial Essence Designer Series Paper – 9.5cm x 13.9cm
Very Vanilla card front – 9cm x 13.4cm
Gold Glimmer Paper – 5cm x 7.5cm
Very Vanilla sentiment piece – 4.5cm x 7cm
Very Vanilla card insert – 10cm x 14.4cm
Stamp the lined flower image from the Floral Essence stamp set in Calypso Coral in opposite corners of the Calypso Coral card base. This adds dimension to the base layer of the card.
Die cut the Very Vanilla cardstock and Gold Glimmer Paper piece for the sentiment piece. The Gold Glimmer is cut using the fourth up from smallest scalloped oval, and the Very Vanilla is cut using the fourth up from smallest straight edge oval in the Layering Ovals Dies.
Stamp the sentiment in Tuxedo Black Momento ink, centered in the oval. Stamp the lined flower image in Calypso Coral in the very top of the oval, and again stamped off in the bottom half of the oval.
TIP: It is good to ink up the stamp between these stamps to the paper. This is because the first stamp over the very top of the oval has part of the stamped image off of the cardstock. If you were to immediately stamp it in the bottom half of the oval it would have weird lines where the stamp overhung from the paper.
Adhere the Very Vanilla sentiment piece to the Gold Glimmer piece using Multipurpose Glue or Tear & Tape.
To create the wreath of flowers on the Very Vanilla card front piece, first place the sentiment piece in the center and trace lightly around the edge with a pencil. Be mindful that the Very Vanilla card front piece will be at an angle when it is adhered to the card base.
Use this pencil line to determine where to stamp the flowers. Start by stamping the large solid flower in Calypso Coral at the top and the bottom of the oval. Next, use a mask cut out from a large post-it to cover one of these flowers and stamp another next to it and overlapping a little. Make this second set of stamped flowers stamped off. Repeat this on the other side of each full strength flower.
You should be left with enough space to stamp two more flowers – one either side of the wreath full strength stamping.
TIP: Stamp the image you want to mask onto the post-it. Ensure the majority of the stamped image is over the section of post-it with adhesive on the back. Cut out the stamped image right on the edge of the image to prevent any border being made from the mask.
Use the flower mask to stamp the leaf image in each corner. Stamp the leaves in Old Olive, and then again stamped off. This helps to lift the card.
Stamp the stamen for the solid flower in So Saffron.
Take the Whisper White Crinkle Seam Binding Ribbon and colour the full length with the Dark Old Olive Stampin’ Blend. These alcohol markers making adding colour to ribbons and twine super easy, and the final result is a smooth coverage.
Wrap this around the Very Vanilla card front piece and tie a bow. Adhere this panel to the card front using Multipurpose Liquid Glue or Tear & Tape.
Use an eraser to remove the pencil marks from the Very Vanilla cardstock. Adhere the sentiment piece using Stampin’ Dimensionals.
On the Very Vanilla card insert, stamp the solid flower in Calypso Coral and the stamen in So Saffron. Use the post-it mask to stamp the leaves in Old Olive, one full strength and one half strength. You could repeat this stamping on the envelope too.
