June Cards & Coffee.

June Cards & Coffee.

This month’s class was designed to show off the Watercolour Pencils. They are a great product to have on hand when crafting.

Of course, the Watercolour Pencils pair perfectly with Fluid 100 Watercolour Paper and Water Painters, but by using them they way we did in this class you can get good faux watercolour effects on regular Basic White cardstock. I will say, however, that you can’t beat watercolour paper for creating watercolour looks. Basic White especially doesn’t handle a lot of water very well, which is why we used Blender Pens with the Watercolour Pencils.

We used the Old Olive Watercolour Pencil to create a faux watercolour wash as a centre piece for the Dutch door fun fold card. To get this effect we coloured randomly down the Basic White panel making some areas darker than others, and then smoothed out the pencil lines using one of the Blender Pens.

A bit of tone-on-tone stamping across the inside of the card created texture behind the watercolour wash panel. I absolutely loved the Hydrangea Hill Designer Series Paper, and I love how this sheet of purple and blue hydrangeas lifts the watercolour wash panel. We finished the card with a simple sentiment stamped on Highland Heather cardstock in Blackberry Bliss and a few of the Pastel Pearls scattered around the front of the card.

For the second card we made, I focused on using the Watercolour Pencils to colour in a stamped image using the Blender Pens to create a faux watercolour look. Colouring this way with the Watercolour Pencils is fabulous for this type of small image where it may be tricky to stay within the lines.

We randomly stamped the hydrangea flower cluster down the left-hand side of a piece of Basic White, and then chose contrasting colours for colouring the flowers. I chose to leave the leaves white so that they wouldn’t take focus from the rest of the card. Next, we adhered a strip of the green and gold foil Expressions in Ink Specialty Designer Series Paper to the left-hand side of the Basic White piece and adhered right up against the right-hand side of the card front.

To finish off the card, we stamped the sentiment – one of my faves from the Hydrangea Hill stamp set – in Evening Evergreen onto a strip of Soft Sea Foam and adhered a length of Basic Grey twine from the Bakers Twine Essentials Pack behind it. A couple Rhinestone Basic Jewels scattered around the card front and we were done.

Free As a Bird Shaker Card.

Free As a Bird Shaker Card.

Hello and welcome to this tutorial. I had a lot of fun creating this shaker card using the Free As a Bird stamp set, and I hope you enjoy having a go yourself.

The link to the corresponding YouTube video is below – check out my channel and subscribe to be notified of new content.

To make this project you will need:

  • Crumb Cake card base – 10.5cm x 29.8cm
  • Whisper White cardstock – 9.5cm x 13.9cm
  • So Saffron Subtles 6×6 Designer Series Paper – 9cm x 13.4cm
  • Window Sheet – 8cm x 11cm
  • Whisper White cardstock for inside card – 10cm x 14.4xm
  • Whisper White cardstock for birds – **cm x **cm
  • Whisper White Twine **cm

Stamp the Birch background stamp in Crumb Cake ink onto the front of the Crumb Cake card base.

Adhere the piece of So Saffron Subtles 6×6 Designer Series Paper (DSP) to the 9.5cm x 13.4cm Whisper White cardstock using Multipurpose Liquid Glue or Tear & Tape. Be sure to have sufficient adhesive running across the center of the DSP to ensure the layer doesn’t separate after die cutting the oval.

Use the largest straight edge oval in the Layering Oval Dies set to cut out the center of the DSP.

Adhere the Window Sheet to the back of the DSP piece using Snail Adhesive or Tear & Tape.

Tie the Whisper White Solid Baker’s Twine around the bottom of the DSP piece and tie a bow. Position the bow on the right hand side.

Adhere Foam Adhesive Strips around the die cut oval, keeping a 0.5cm (ish) space between the edge of the paper and the foam strips.

NOTE: This is so that the foam strips can’t be seen when the card is on an angle, and so that whatever you use to fill the shaker card isn’t sitting totally out of view when the card is standing.

Adhere more foam strips down the left and right hand side of the DSP piece.

Pour out a small pile of Iridescent Sequins onto the front of the card. Remove the backing from the foam strips, and adhere the DSP piece to the card front.

NOTE: Be sure to check the shaker card fillings (sequins) are positioned in the center of the card front before removing the backing from the foam strips.

Stamp the birds sitting on a branch on a piece of Whisper White cardstock using Tuxedo Black Momento. Colour the image in using Watercolour Pencils, and smooth out the pencil lines with a Blender Pen. This gives the image a faux watercolour look, without watercolour paper or water! I love this technique for finer details like this stamped image.

Fussy cut the birds using Paper Snips and adhere to the card front framing the die cut oval using Multipurpose Liquid Glue or Tear & Tape.

Repeat the colouring process and fussy cutting for the large single flower and adhere to the 10cm x 14.4cm piece of Whisper White carstock, in the bottom right corner.

Adhere this Whisper White piece to the inside of the card using Multipurpose Liquid Glue or Tear & Tape.

Stamp the ‘Thank You’ sentiment in Tuxedo Black Momento on a scrap of Whisper White cardstock. Cut this tight to the words using Paper Snips. Place Mini Stampin’ Dimensionals to the back of the sentiment, at the top. Adhere the sentiment so that the bottom of it sits on top of the twine.

I also made this shaker card in Smoky Slate for the base, and Balmy Blue for the DSP layer. The sequins I used are Woven Threads Sequins.

Do you need to order any of the products used to make this shaker card? I would so appreciate your order. Each order helps me prepare and share project tutorials just like this one.

March 8 x 8 Sampler.

March 8 x 8 Sampler.

We weren’t able to hold my March sampler class due to New Zealand moving into Alert Level 4 with COVID-19. I missed sharing this design with the ladies who had booked in for the class, but everyone’s health and well-being is far more important.

In lieu of a class, I hope you enjoy seeing the Easter themed project I had prepared.

The Fable Friends stamp set was too cute to pass by for an Easter themed sampler page. The rabbit and ducklings were coloured using a blending technique I learnt from a fellow Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator, Bev Poultney.

Use Watercolour Pencils to colour in the rabbit and duckling. I tried to do some shading by going darker around the edges and lighter in the middle of each area. Then bring in your Blender Pen and create a water coloured look by smoothing out the pencil lines. This is a fun technique if, like me, you struggle with water colouring.

I used the Thoughtful Blooms stamp set and co-ordinating punch from the Sale-a-Bration freebies to create the flower and leaves on the panel with the rabbit. Colours used for the flowers are Flirty Flamingo, Calypso Coral and So Saffron, and the leaves are Pear Pizzazz.

To finish off the flowers, I coloured Clear Faceted Gems using Daffodil Delight Light Stampin’ Blends.

The Easter panel in Crumb Cake is embossed with the Basket Weave 3D Embossing Folder. I die cut the letters from a sheet of Calypso Coral Subtles 6×6 Designer Series Paper.

The ‘Happy’ is from the stamp set Wildly Happy and is stamped on So Saffron card stock.

For the panel with the chicks in Easter eggs I created a fun faux suede texture with the Pear Pizzazz grass. When you run a bone folder over a piece of card stock over and over the card stock will start to separate. Once the card stock comes a part, carefully pull the card stock in two.

I coloured Whisper White Crinkled Seam Binding Ribbon with Dark So Saffron Stampin’ Blend. I love having white twine or ribbons for my crafting, because with the Stampin’ Blends they are customize-able for any project.

How exciting is this? Stampin’ Up! are releasing this amazing suite of products at the beginning of April.

The Ornate Garden Suite features new products from the upcoming Annual Catalogue such as:

  • Stamp sets
  • Dies
  • Specialty Designer Series Paper
  • Ribbons
  • Embellishments
  • 3D embossing folder
